Refuge from Cruel Trapping Act

S.1081 - Refuge from Cruel Trapping Act

RE: S.1081 - Refuge from Cruel Trapping Act

Our National Wildlife Refuges number over 500.

A guiding principle of the National Wildlife Refuge System states:

"We are land stewards, guided by Aldo Leopold's teachings that land is a community of life and that love and respect for the land is an extension of ethics. We seek to reflect that land ethic in our stewardship and to instill it in others."

Yet, OVER HALF ALLOW TRAPPING!

Montana Senator Daines sits on the committee. He wrote in an email response he opposes animal cruelty, which trapping clearly is, but also included he does not want to harm Montana's proud hunting heritage.

Trapping violates principles of ethical hunting i.e. fair chase, know your target, quick clean kill, commercializes our wildlife and causes needless indiscriminate suffering.

Trapping was part of our past but not something most Montanan's are proud to see continue on our public lands especially wildlife refuges!

Please call Senator Daines to at least not oppose, but preferably support, S. 1081 Refuge from Cruel Trapping Act.

Senator Tester replied to us with an email "understanding concerns about treating animals with dignity and respect" but then goes on to indicate he would oppose this bill as trapping on refuges are "management tools."  A trapped animal and all it is forced to indiscriminately endure is far removed from being treated with dignity and respect.

Our NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE SYSTEM is home to reported more than 700 species of birds, 220 species of mammals, 250 species of reptiles and amphibians, 1,000 species of fish as well as innumerable invertebrates and plants. The refuges are promoted to provide safe haven for 280 endangered species.

TRAPPING AND WILDLIFE REFUGE IS AN OXYMORON.
