Wounded red-tailed hawk captured, euthanized

November 24,2018 - Traverse City, Michigan

Rebecca Lessard recently endured some heartache for a starving red-tailed hawk which was found missing one foot.

The bird was captured last week in the Traverse City area by the founder and director of nonprofit Wings of Wonder after being tipped off about the flailing hawk. The hawk was emaciated and suffered a wound to its leg that resulted in the loss of its right foot, Lessard said, so it was humanely euthanized.

Lessard contends the immature male hawk must have been caught in a foot-hold trap and perhaps even released while injured, rather than a wildlife rehabilitation official being called in to assist.
